Homemade BBQ Sauce

The other day I ran out of bbq sauce while making mushroom nuggets, and the weather is so awful in Montreal right now that I decided to make my own rather than slide down the hill by my house to a grocery store. This actually seemed like a great opportunity, because why bbq sauce is generally vegan, it also contains a bunch of refined sugars and often oil. It’s shockingly easy to make, and you probably already have all of the ingredients in your cabinet! This version is vegan, gluten free, refined sugar free and oil free. This is how we made it:

Homemade BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

1 cup tomato paste

½ cup water

¼ cup apple cider vinegar

1 tbsp Bragg’s Liquid Aminos

1 tbsp blackstrap molasses

½ tbsp lemon juice

½ tsp paprika

½ tsp chili powder

2 dates, pitted

½ tsp black pepper

½ tsp ground mustard

½ tsp liquid smoke

⅛ tsp cayenne

Directions:

Place all of the ingredients ingredients in a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more water, and the spiciness by adding more cayenne.

Serve with everything. I actually put some of this on pasta the other night because I’m gross.
